Have Fun and Help People

Published on

I started enjoying networking when I stopped having any goals except “have fun and help people.” I also feel that’s when it started working. The tenets I follow:

  1. Talk to strangers, most people want to chat.
  2. Ask people how you can help them.
  3. Know your ask.

My favourite outcome of this approach: helping a person get a job.

  1. At a running event I asked a woman “hey, how can I help you?” and she was looking for a job in operations, asking for leads
  2. A few days later, I met two guys opening a new branch of their company. “Hey, how can I help you?” – and they were looking for 6 employees for this new branch… Including a position in ops. My brain lit up!
  3. She got the job less than week later after we met.

This only happened because I asked “hey, how can I help you?”
